The final drive bridges this gap through gear reduction. Picture a small, fast gear (driven by the hydraulic motor) turning a much larger gear. The large gear turns slower but with far greater force. The final drive uses a compact, efficient planetary gear system to achieve an even more dramatic reduction within a small space.
Typically, multiple reduction stages are stacked. Each stage consists of a central sun gear (input), multiple planet gears meshing with it and an outer ring gear (fixed to the housing). As the sun gear spins, it forces the planet gears to "walk" around the inside of the ring gear. The planet carrier, holding these planet gears, rotates slower than the sun gear but with massively increased torque. This output torque from the carrier drives the sprocket shaft. Reduction ratios can be 50:1 or higher! This means for every 50 rotations of the hydraulic motor, the sprocket might only turn once, but with 50 times the turning force – enabling the excavator to overcome immense resistance.
