The final drive's inherent mechanical resistance (friction in gears, bearings, seals) and the hydraulic system's ability to absorb this reverse flow provide significant drag braking. This helps prevent uncontrolled rolling on slopes. More importantly, the final drive enables fine control. By precisely metering hydraulic oil flow to the motor, the operator can control the speed and torque output of the final drive.
