Vane pumps represent a middle ground between gear and piston pumps in terms of complexity and performance. Their core component is a rotor with sliding vanes. As the rotor spins, centrifugal force extends the vanes to contact the pump housing, creating varying sealed volumes that accomplish oil intake and discharge.
Compared to gear pumps, vane pumps operate more smoothly, with lower noise levels, reduced flow pulsation, and slightly higher efficiency. Their drawbacks include relatively complex structure, higher oil cleanliness requirements, and generally lower working pressures than piston pumps. In medium-sized excavators, vane pumps often serve as pilot or auxiliary pumps.
