Working pressure, measured in megapascals (MPa) or bars (bar), indicates a pump's maximum output pressure, directly determining the thrust or torque a hydraulic system can generate. Standard gear pumps typically operate at 16-21MPa, while high-performance piston pumps reach 35-42MPa.
Higher pressures enable hydraulic cylinders and motors to generate greater force, allowing excavators to lift heavier loads or dig tougher materials. However, high pressure also demands better seals and piping, increasing leakage risks. Modern excavator hydraulic systems typically operate at 30-35MPa, balancing power and reliability.
Hydraulic pump efficiency comprises volumetric and mechanical efficiency. Volumetric efficiency compares actual to theoretical flow rate, primarily affected by internal leakage. Mechanical efficiency measures how much input power converts to hydraulic power, mainly influenced by frictional losses. Combined total efficiency can exceed 90% in quality piston pumps.
Though less visible than displacement or pressure, efficiency significantly impacts excavator fuel consumption. Efficient hydraulic pumps reduce energy loss, lowering engine load and saving fuel. This explains why high-end excavators invest more in high-efficiency piston pumps.
